While it’s no denying that we, as inhabitants of earth contribute to the planet’s slow-coming death, nature can be terrifying on its own as well. In recent years, parts of the world has suffered because of events that are completely out of our hands. Here are the three that struck the hardest in recent times.

2004 Asian Tsunami – Following a series of earthquakes right after Christmas day, the events resulted into a series of tsunamis that hit Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. With a magnitude of 9.1 and 9.3, the earthquake that caused the tsunami is recorded as the second largest earthquake ever recorded.

2005 Hurricane Katrina – One of the five deadliest hurricanes that hit the United States, the storm is estimated to have caused over 8 billion dollars in damages, making it one of the costliest disasters in history.

2008 China Earthquake – Just last month, China was hit by an earthquake that is estimated to have been 8.0 to 8.3 in magnitude. The one that makes this one of the worst disasters is, roughly two weeks after the first earthquake hit, an aftershock of 6.0 magnitude hit northeast of the original earthquake’s location, causing a couple more deaths and thousands of injuries.
